Press bodies react to SUMA diktat

ITANAGAR, Feb 08: In what can best be described as an attempt to curb press freedom and dictate terms to the media in the state, members of the Students' Union Movement of Arunachal (SUMA) on Friday evening gheraoed the office of 'The Arunachal Times' and issued verbal threats to one of its journalists.

Reacting to a news item which appeared on the February 7 issue of the newspaper under the headline "Economic blockade lifted due to efforts of AAPSU and AASU says NESO Adviser", several SUMA members including young school students rallied outside 'The Arunachal Times' office at around 6:10 pm. Reportedly, the union's convenor Pebo Gyadi and vice-president Tagru Tame and another person demanded that they be allowed to enter the office. Once they were let in, the mob which had gathered outside began sloganeering besides kicking and shaking the entrance grill of the office whilst threatening to break down the office building.

It was then that Gyadi charged at journalist Taba Ajum and hurled a newspaper towards him.

SUMA members were opposed to the claim made by the NESO adviser. They said that AAPSU and NESO representatives were nowhere to be seen in the important joint meeting held at Gohpur, Assam on February 5 last along with members of All Nyishi Students Union (ANSU), Arunachal Law Students' Union (ALSU), All Papum Pare District Youth Association (APPDYA), Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), All Assam Gurkha Students Union (AAGSU), Assam Minorities Students Union (AMSU), All Adivasi Students' Association of Assam (AASAA), All Assam Tea Tribes Students' Association (AATTSA).

Further, SUMA members went on to accuse press persons of "playing politics", and tried to dictate their own terms of publishing stories. Were it not for the timely intervention of the Arunachal Press Club (APC) president Chopa Cheda and the level-headedness of the staff present, the scene could have turned uglier.

As a fallout of the rowdy behaviour displayed by those who claim to represent the voice and aspirations of the people, the APC and the Arunachal Pradesh Union of Working Journalists (APUWJ) today issued a show-cause notice to SUMA questioning what right it has to dictate its terms on the press.

Reminding SUMA of its repeated offences against the media, the APC and APUWJ in its notice addressed to its president Biri Tabing said that "this is not the first time that the SUMA members have behaved in such abusive manner towards press persons of the state. It is to be reminded here that, slogans were shouted against press persons during a SUMA rally at Niti Vihar, abusive words were used against a lady journalist by a member of SUMA, verbal threats were used against the Arunachal Press Club president and outstanding advertisement dues of more than a year remains to be paid to media houses by SUMA".

A joint statement by the APC and APUWJ condemning the entire episode questioned whether SUMA is "financially backing media houses of the state that it feels it can dictate what can or cannot be published or broadcasted".

"While we appreciate the efforts put in by all those who helped bring the temporary lifting of the blockade, we question why unions are so eager to take credit instead of merely rejoicing in the fact that the blockade has been lifted. After all, did Mahatma Gandhi ever claim responsibility for India's independence or did Nelson Mandela say that he was solely responsible for removal of apartheid in South Africa?", the APC and APUWJ reasoned.

The two press bodies further said that "if SUMA has problems with what the NESO adviser said then they should take it up with him. Such behaviour is a clear indication that they are merely trying to prey on the press who everyone perceives to be easy targets instead of challenging those it should".

"We have had enough of presidents and generals trying to shove their diktats down our collective throats. When these unions want newspaper column space they are extremely polite but the moment an opinion or statement expressed by a third person or party which goes against their belief gets published, they begin accusing the press of biasness", the strongly worded joint statement read, further adding that "while the notice has been served to one organisation, it should serve as a warning to all others who think that media persons are alone and can be easily dominated".

Death of Tania a national shame: Modi

IMPHAL, Feb 08: BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi on Saturday said the death of Arunachal Pradesh student Nido Tania in Delhi is a matter of national shame and asked the Centre and the Delhi government to shun their blame game on the issue and ensure justice for him.

He said such incidents further alienate the people of the northeastern states, which due to the "unfortunate policies" of the Congress have been neglected and have not developed in the last 60 years.

"It (the death of Nido Tania in Delhi) is a shameful incident for the nation. I offer my prayers for the boy and his family...There is lack of governance there. There are cases of atrocities on women.

"I hope the Government of India and the Government of Delhi come out of the blame game and works towards ensuring justice for the young boy and his family," Modi said. 19-year-old Tania, an Arunachal Pradesh MLA's son, was found dead last month after he was allegedly beaten up by a group of 5-6 men in Lajpat Nagar market in South Delhi following an altercation sparked by their taunts on his hairstyle.
